Biography

Nanci (Cherry) Adkins is a part of US Black heritage.

Nanci (Cherry) Adkins was born in Illinois.

Chicago native Nanci Pugh waited until her younger child was in kindergarten before entering Fisk University. She graduated magna cum laude in 1975 with membership in Phi Beta Kappa, earned a law degree from Vanderbilt University (1978), passed the Tennessee Bar exam, and became an attorney for the Veteran’s Administration. Attending a football game in Atlanta, she was introduced to former Fisk dean Rutherford H. Adkins [#60], then teaching at Morehouse College. She married the former Tuskegee Airman in November 1992, and Dr. Adkins soon returned with her to Nashville to chair Fisk’s Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He was appointed interim president (1996), becoming president in October 1997, but, tragically, he was diagnosed with cancer a month later and died in early February. Mrs. Adkins continued to serve the community as treasurer of the Napier-Looby Bar Association and as a member of NAACP, National Bar Association, Fisk Alumni Association, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Metro Council’s Board of Ethical Conduct. -- written by Kathy Lauder for the Greenwood Cemetery Project.
