Bobby Charlton CBE is Notable.

Robert's birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1937 in the Nthmbld. Central district.[1] His parents were Robert "Bob" Charlton and Elizabeth Ellen "Cissie" Milburn.

Bobby has football in the family. His uncles were

  • Jackie Milburn (Newcastle United and England) - mother's cousin
  • Jack Charlton (Leeds United) - elder brother

However, Bobby has stated in his autobiography that much of his childhood footballing inspiration came from his mother, Cassie, and her father, "Tanner" Note: "Tanner" was so called because his family joked that he was half the size of his brother, Bob - and a 'tanner' was slang for sixpence, or half a bob (shilling).

Bobby Charlton became one of the famous "Busby Babes" - talented young footballers who progressed from the youth team to the Manchester United main team. They were so called because of manager Matt Busby (later to become Sir Matt Busby) orchestrated this restructuring of Manchester United players. Unfortunately, eight of these talented players died in the Munich air disaster of 1958, but Bobby Charlton survived, although not uninjured. Two other survivors never played again. After convalescing, Bobby returned to playing football. He later did his National Service (military service) in Shrewsbury, especially so he could play with Manchester United at the weekends.

Should this sentence: "The award itself was present by his brother, Jack, and the audience gave Bobby a standing ovation." Instead say: "The award itself was presented by his brother, Jack, and the audience gave Bobby a standing ovation."?
