When John Robert CHARD BURFURD was born in 1819 in Clayhidon, Devon, his father, Robert Chard, was 34 and his mother, Mary Burford, was 35. John Robert was said to have been wanted for attack during the Napoleonic war - and on stowawaying to Australia, jumped ship, crossed illegally into South Australia (a common practice prior to Federation (1901)), then crossed back into Victoria through a legal checkpoint, changing his surname by taking on his mother's maiden name - but misspelled it (either accidently, on purpose or a 'typo'). He then headed for the Goldfields. He married Jessie (Janet) McKenzie on 4 April 1856 in Castlemaine, Victoria. They had 11 children in 20 years. His occupation was Licenced Victueller. He died on 28 October 1886 in Ballarat, Victoria, at the age of 67.
