Harry Forster Chapin was born on Dec. 7, 1942 in New York City to Jeanne Elspeth (Burke) Chapin Hart and Jim Chapin, a legendary percussionist. His parents divorced when he was 6.
He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, and attended the US Air Force Academy for 3 months before dropping out.
In 1965, and with his brothers Tom, Steve, and with their father Jim Chapin on drums, "The Chapin Brothers" begin touring professionally,
He relaunched his music career in the early 1970s without his brothers when he was signed to the Elektra label. Chapin was best known for his story songs including "Taxi", "W*O*L*D", "Sniper", "Flowers Are Red", and the No. 1 hit "Cat's in the Cradle". Chapin was also a dedicated humanitarian who fought to end world hunger; he was a driving force behind the creation of Jimmy Carter's Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977.
He died at the age of 38 on July 16, 1981 in a car crash on the Long Island Expressway. Fittingly, he was on his way to a benefit concert. In 1987, Chapin was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his humanitarian work.
