Gen. John Chandler was born at Epping, New Hampshire, 1 Feb 1762, the son of Joseph Chandler and Lydia Eastman [1] [2] died at Augusta, Maine, 25 Sep 1841, and is buried there in the Mount Vernon Cemetery (the oldest section of Augusta's Mount Hope Cemetery); [3] [4] married Mary Whittier, born at Monmouth, Maine, 16 Feb 1764; died at Augusta, 16 Sep 1846, and buried with her husband. [5] [6]

Following the death of his father, John sailed from Newburyport, Massachusetts, aboard an American privateer in 1778, and was captured; but escaped his prison ship near Delaware Bay to return to Monmouth, Maine, then still a part of Massachusetts, about 1780, where he married Mary Whittier (1764-1846) on 27 August 1783. Their children were:

  1. Caroline Elizabeth (Chandler) Prescott (born 20 August 1784)
  2. a twin, 1st Clarissa (born 20 August 1784 and died the following day)
  3. 2nd Clarissa (1786-1792)
  4. John Alfonzo Chandler (born 19 May 1791)
  5. Anson Gonzalo Chandler (born 14 October 1793)
  6. 3rd Clarissa Augusta (Chandler) Nourse (1797-1834)
  7. William Henry Augustus Chandler (born 24 April 1803)

John worked as a blacksmith in Monmouth, and held a number of government offices, including town clerk, surveyor, selectman, and representative to the legislature in Boston. He represented Massachusetts in Congress from 1805 to 1808; and served as a general in the Massachusetts Militia through the war of 1812. His capture during a night attack by British forces near Stoney Creek, Ontario, was a major British victory and turning point in the Niagara campaign. He was in the General Court of Massachusetts at Boston during the 1819 convention which drafted the constitution for a separate state of Maine. He became president of the Maine senate before being elected as one of the first two United States Senators from the State of Maine. In 1822 he was part of the committee which selected Augusta as the Maine state capitol. In 1829 he was appointed by President Jackson as collector for the Port of Portland, Maine; and he held that position until he moved to Augusta in 1837 where he died a few years later.[7]
