Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)

John Chambers was born on 18 Jul 1794 in Ireland.^[1][2] He was the son of Samuel and Deborah Chambers.^[3] John and his family moved to the United States of America. They were Quakers and in 1815 they transferred from the Butternuts Monthly Meeting in New York to the Plainfield Monthly Meeting in Ohio.^[4]

John married Mary Ann Combs on 2 Oct 1823 within the Plainfield Monthly Meeting in Ohio.^[3] In December 1823, they were granted a certificate to move to the Alum Creek Monthly Meeting in Ohio.^[4] They had five children before Mary Ann's death in 1846:^[5]

• Lewis D. Chambers (born 1840)

John married Rachel W. Lewis on 2 Feb 1848. They had one daughter, Eunice (born 1849).^[5] In 1850, their blended family lived in Perry Township, Richland County, Ohio and John was working as a farmer.^[6] Rachel died in 1858.^[5] In 1860, John and his children Lewis and Eunice were granted a certificate to move to the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting.^[5]

John died in Harlan, Shelby County, Iowa on 30 Mar 1885.^[7][1] He was buried in Springdale Cemetery in Springdale, Cedar County, Iowa.^[2]
