Biography

Joseph Franklin Chambers was born in Iredell County, North Carolina on 19 Oct 1812. He first married Laura Brown (1822-1844) on 26 Aug 1843 in Rowan County, North Carolina. He later married Mary Ann Martha Avery (1831-1890). [1]

Joseph and Mary had the following children:

  2. Isaac Avery Chambers (1859–1859)
  3. Frank Avery Chambers (1860)
  4. Jessie C Chambers (1862)
  5. Lizzie Adelaide Chambers (1864)
  6. Laura Eloise Chambers (1866)
  7. Kate Lenoir (Chambers) Ross (1867–1913)
  8. William Pinckney Chambers (1871–1945)
  9. Waightstill Moulton Chambers (1874)

In the 1850 census Joseph Chambers (age 36), Merchant, was living in a hotel in Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina, United States.[2]

In the 1860 census Jos F Chambers (age 47), Farmer, was in South of the River, Iredell, North Carolina.[3]

Slaves

He was one of the largest farmers in Iredell County, North Carolina in 1860. He lived in the Enola Post Office Area, south of the Yadkin River in Iredell County in 1860. In 1860 his estate and personal property were valued at $22,700 and $37,900. He had an estate overseer, named Joseph Barber. He held 33 enslaved people and had 4 slave houses on his property.[4] [5]

Joseph died on 20 Aug 1877 in Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina. He was buried at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Morganton.[1]
