Lowell Augustus was born in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1838, the son of Lowell and Mary (Waite) Chamberlain.[1]
He was a sail-maker in 1860, when he was residing at a boarding house in Boston.[2] He married Mary Elizabeth Bent in Quincy, Mass., on October 17, 1867.[3] They had 5 children.[4]
"He was 1st Sergeant in the 2nd Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery from July 5, 1861 to December 11, 1861, when he was discharged. He then became a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Maryland Light Artillery, Battery A, on December 16, 1861. Lt. Chamberlain entered service as a 2nd Lieutenant in Battery A, Wolcott's, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on January 21, 1863. He transferred with the rest of Battery A into Snow's Battery on March 11, 1865 and mustered out July 3, 1865.
"After mustering out on July 3, 1865, Chamberlain joined the 5th U.S. Volunteers, as a 1st Lieutenant on July 31, 1865, and finally mustered out July 20, 1866. He then joined the 1st Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant on May 11, 1866, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on August 28, 1867. He resigned November 17, 1873, but was reinstated March 23, 1875, and promoted to Captain on November 25, 1886.
"Five years before his death, Chamberlain was duly honored by the naming of the Chamberlain Battery, shore defense artillery at San Francisco, Cal., in his honor on December 27, 1894."''[5]
Lowell died in San Francisco, California, in 1889. He was buried at the San Francisco National Cemetery.[6]
