Noted journalist and newspaper editor. Later in career was employed by William Randolph Hearst.
He "was principal of Walworth Acad., Gilbertville Collegiate Inst.; political editor of the New York World and Herald.[1]
"His first newspaper work was done on the old New York World, before the days of Pulitzer. He worked In New Jersey and then became private secretary for James Gordon Bennett, traveling over the world with that publisher. He founded the parls Matin and the Morning News, the latter in the English language. This was while still In the service of Bennett."[2]
"Le Matin was a French daily newspaper founded in 1884 and published until 1944. Le Matin was launched on the initiative of Chamberlain & Co., a group of American financiers and the American newspaper editor Samuel Selwyn Chamberlain, in 1883, on the model of the British daily The Morning News."[3]
"He returned to America and was brought by Mr. Hearst to San Francisco In 1889. Then began the period of constructive work that has since made his name famous in journalism. With the exception of one year, when he went to Wanamaker’s Philadelphia North American, his service has been given to the Hearst newspapers. He was essentially a 'builder of newspapers.'"[2]
