Esther Chadwick was born about 1829, based on age reported in the 1850 census as well as on her death record.^[1] Her parents were [[chadwick-3941|Jason Chadwick] and his wife Bethany G. (Hamlin) Chadwick.^[2]

In the 1850 census,^[2] Esther is 21 years of age and still living at home in China, Kennebec, Maine.

She married Thomas Treadwell about 1853, based on eldest child (in the 1860 census)

In the 1860 census,^[3] Esther, 31, was living with her husband, Thomas Motherwell, aged 33, peddler, and their four children:

1. Angelitta, 6
2. George W., 5
3. Lizzie, 2
4. Flora, four months

A fifth child, Edward Thomas Motherwell, was born in 1866.

The 1900 census^[4] finds Esther, 71, living in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine with her single daughter Flora, now 40, working as a dressmaker. Esther is widowed. She reports her birthdate as Feb 1829, and that she had five children, only four of whom survive. The deceased daughter was Lizzie Motherwell who died in 1899 at the age of 41 years, 10 months and 14 days.

Esther died on 27 Sep 1901 in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine.^[1]
