Albert Edward Chadwick was born in October 1897 at or about Beechworth in the colony of Victoria, in what was soon to become Australia. He was the son of Andrew Chadwick (1854-1906), and Georgina Ann Chadwick (1867-1948), née Prater.

On 12 February 1916 he lied about his age and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, as an air mechanic. He saw active service overseas with the No.67 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps (No.1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps) in the Middle East. And in 1918 he was promoted to sergeant and the next year he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. During World War II, Albert Chadwick also served in the Royal Australian Air Force being discharged on the 6th of July 1945 with the rank of Wing Commander

Albert Chadwick (Melbourne/Hawthorn) was Inducted into the AFL HALL OF FAME in 1996. Not bad for a boy who had not picked a football until his war time service in Egypt.

Albert Edward Chadwick had married Thelma Marea Crawley (1899-1979) in 1924 at St George’s Church of England, Royal Park, Melbourne. With their son Robert Edward Chadwick (1927-1992) later following in his father's footsteps and playing for the Melbourne Football Club.
