Biography

John Chadwick of Watertown, Massachusetts, most likely brother or cousin of Thomas, was born most likely in England about the same time as Thomas. John died at Watertown on 5 February 1710/11.[1] In 1671 he was accused of fathering an illegitimate child, but found not guilty. [2] He married before 1672, most likely Plymouth, Massachusetts, Sarah Manning.[3] He was an inn-keeper.[4]

He is buried at the Old Burying Place in Watertown. His stone has the inscription:[5]

HERE LYES ye
BODY OF JOHN
CHADWICK WHO
DECD FEBRY ye 5th
1710[/11] IN ye 65
YEAR OF HIS AGE

Research Notes

There is a lot of misinformation about this John Chadwick. His gravestone says that he died in Feb. 1711(n.s.) at 65, which would put his birth between Feb. 1645 and Jan. 1646. He is frequently confused with John Chadwick who was born in Malden, Massachusetts in 1651. This John Chadwick was apparently born in England, probably Rochdale, and came to America before 1673 when his first daughter, Elizabeth, was born.[6]

The only thing we really know about his marriage is that his wife's name was Sarah (Sary). Many family trees state that he and Sarah were married in Plymouth, Mass.[7], but it seems odd that he would have married in Plymouth when both he and Sarah lived in Watertown.

What sources show his wife's last name was Manning? If her name was Manning, she is not the Sarah Manning, daughter of William.

Sarah Manning, daughter of William and Dorothy Manning, married Joseph Bull. The best evidence supporting their marriage is in her father's estate, of which Sarah Bull, daughter of William, and her husband Joseph Bull shared in the distribution of William's estate. See Sarah (Manning) Bull for the source (from "The genealogical and biographical history of the Manning families of New England and descendants")

I've added a link to his will & inventory in the research notes if anyone is inclined to add the info to his bio.

His wife is identified only as Sarah ___, and his daughter Hannah as probably born in England, not Mass., before 1673.

Chadwick-437 and Chadwick-1386 appear to represent the same person because: They appear to be the same man. Their sons are also the same.

Chadwick-437 and Chadwick-419 appear to represent the same person because: Chadwick-419 should be merged in Chadwick-437 because is has no information at all and is just a useless profile.

I have rejected a match of John Chadwick and John Chadwick because Chadwick-2 is one of the Bradford Chadwicks and Chadwick-1294 is one of the Watertown Chadwicks. They are not the same person. See Chadwicks of Early Massachusetts Bay Colony

Chadwick-1294 and Chadwick-437 appear to represent the same person because: These are both profiles for John Chadwick of Watertown, who married Sarah "Sary" Manning.

This John Chadwick should be merged into one of the other John Chadwicks (e.g. Chadwick-419), since there is no information in his profile.
