Biography

Harry Francis was the son of Digby Cayley and Charlotte Bower. He was baptised at Scarborough, Yorkshire on 29 July 1873 with his parents named as Digby and Charlotte Philadelphia.[1]

The 1881 census lists Harry, age 7, at Brompton, North Riding, Yorkshire, with his birthplace as Scarborough.[2]

Harry enlisted as a midshipman in the Royal Navy on 15 September 1888. He was promoted to lieutenant on 30 September 1894. He was placed on "retired rest" on 31 December 1904 at his own request, but served again during World War One. He was awarded the DSO on 27 June 1917, with a bar added in 1918 for his personal involvement in minesweeping in difficult circumstances. On 11 November 1918 he was made a captain (retired).[3]

Harry's marriage to Margery Freake was registered in the Kensington district of London in the 2nd quarter of 1900.[4] Banns for their marriage were read at Stoke Fleming, Devonshire on 25 March, 1 April and 8 April 1900.[5]

The 1901 census lists Harry at Alverstoke, Hampshire, age 27, widowed, Lieutenant (Royal Navy), born Scarborough. Daughter: Margery E, 0, born Fleetlands, Hampshire. Sister: Lucy V, 24, born Brompton, Yorkshire.[6]

The 1911 census lists Harry at Kingston Lisle, Berkshire, age 37, widowed, born Scarborough, retired Lieutenant (Royal Navy). Daughter: Alexandra Margery Eileen, 10, born Fareham, Hampshire. Sister: Lucy Violet, 33, born Brompton, Yorkshire.[7]

The 1939 Register lists Harry at Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, widowed, with his birth date as 4 July 1873 and his occupation as captain (Royal Navy) DSO retired.[8]

Harry's death, age 80, was registered in Oxfordshire in 1954.[9] He was buried at Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire on 3 April 1854, with his residence given as Bix Cottage, Henley-on-Thames, his death date as 31 March 1954 and his age as 80. He is described in the burial record as captain (Royal Navy) retired,[10] Probate on his estate was granted on 12 June 1954, with his death date recorded as 31 march 1954.[11]
