James was the son of Maurice Cayley. The 1861 census records James, age 5, at York, Yorkshire, born York, with his parents as Maurice and Anna.[1]
The 1881 census records James lodging at Scarborough, Yorkshire, age 25, born York, occupation carver and gilder.[2]
The 1901 census lists James at West Hartlepool, County Durham, age 45, born York, occupation carver and girder. Wife Jane, 49, born Hutton Henry, County Durham. Daughter Jane, 12, born Scarborough, Yorkshire.[3]
