Biography

William Cawthorne came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

William Cook Cawthorne was born about 1799 to Isabella and Frederick Cawthorne.[1]

Captain Cawthorne lived in England, Scotland and South Africa before migrating to South Australia with his wife and son on board the Amelia in 1841.[2] He had been in the employ of the Honorable East India Company (HEIC). He was Head Keeper at the Sturt Light, Cape Willoughby, Kangaroo Island, from 1852 until 1862. (Now known as the Cape Willoughby Lighthouse).

Official Appointment. — We understand that Capt Cawthorne has been appointed by His Excellency to the charge of the "Sturt" Lighthouse, at Cape Willoughby, Kangaroo Island, and that he proceeded to his post on Saturday last. Capt. Cawthorne has had considerable experience, we believe, in the management of Lighthouses in the East Indies and elsewhere. [3]

In 1857 he gave his opinion about the siting of a new jetty to a meeting of Glenelg residents.[4]

Captain Cawthorne’s wife died on 14 June 1860 while he was at the Sturt Light. She was Georgiana Sarah age 58 years. She is buried at West Terrace cemetery. In the same grave is a grandson 24 year old Frederick William Cawthorne who died in 1873.

He died in Brighton, South Australia in 1875, aged 76.
