Category: Tribes

Categories: Native Americans | Native Americans Project | Native American Category Review

This is a high level category. Please do not add individual profiles. Add profiles to the narrowest category possible. See How to Categorize.

The primary purpose of this category is to group people by the indigenous tribe with which they were associated. The sub categories below are also used by the "Native American Sticker" template to display the tribe associated with the profiled person. In most cases, therefore, we use only the proper name (Cherokee) and not the current-day legal name (Cherokee Nation).

NOTE: Please do not place reservations or rancherias into this category; they belong in the new (as of April 2024) Native American Reservations category.

The tribes / nations / people below focuses on those concentrated in the area currently known as the United States of America (USA). First Nations is a collective term currently in common usage on the Canadian side of the border, which would be called Native Americans in the USA, but does not include Inuit. Due to the migratory nature of tribes and overlapping traditional lands, some tribes or nations concentrated on the Canadian side of the border (First Nations and Inuit) may be included here for historical reference.

Be sure to check out Category:Native Americans Project Teams to see if there is a sub project or team working on a particular tribe or nation.

This Category needs to be reviewed for duplicates and categories that need to be moved into parent tribal or peoples categories. If you need a tribe category that does not appear here, please contact the Native Americans project leader.
