  • 1885 - Isobel Marion Dorothea Mackellar known as Dorothea Mackellar, OBE was an Australian poet and fiction writer. Her piece My Country is perhaps the best-known Australian poem.
  • 1889 - Charles Laughton, English actor. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in The Private Life of Henry VIII.

Famous Deaths:

  • 1861 - Australian Explorer Robert O'Hara Bourke died of exhaustion and starvation at a place now called Burke's Waterhole on Cooper Creek in South Australia.
  • 1981 - Sidney Loman, the 17th son of a slave who organized the area's first black Boy Scout troops.
