The history of local militia in New York begins in 1640, when the New Amsterdam Council enacted a militia law. The first actual militia unit was the Burgher Guard, organized in 1653 to ward off English encroachment into New Netherland. Militia units were established in other areas of New Netherland as early as 1654.
