To establish formal standards of aviation certification among military flyers, the U.S. Army created the Military Aviator rating and published requirements on 20 April 1912. Twenty-four officers were qualified to wear the Military Aviator Badge with the first being awarded to Henry H. Arnold on 5 July 1912.
