Matangirau marae is on the eastern side of the Whangaroa Harbour near Waitapu Bay. Its wharenui is named Karangahape. This marae is associated with Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa and Ngāpuhi. Its ancestral landmarks are the maunga named Ohau Tieke and Te Towai River.
