- The mantal is a measure of the wealth of a farm, not a simple unit of area, as it depends on the productivity of the land. It is an apportionment figure. A cameral measurement instrument of the wealth of the farm.

- The mantalslängd contains the names of the persons (often just the name of the head of the household) who were supposed to pay the so called mantalspenningar, a tax to be paid by every person between the ages of 15 and 63. It was kept in three copies one by the chancellary archives (Kammararkivet) and one by county tax authorities (Länsstyrelsen), and the third at the local level by the Fögderi, or Häradsskrivare. Kingdomwide the Länsstyrelsen copy was microfilmed (and some other types too) which are available at the Family History Library.
