Category: Honour of Wark

Categories: Early English Feudal Baronies | Wark on Tweed, Northumberland

Sanders (English Baronies, p.149) lists this as a "probable Barony" and calls it the "honour of Wark". (The terms barony and honour do not have a strict dividing line.) Although this one started in the hands of Walter Espec, it went to the family of Everard de Ros d. 1183 "some time during Henry II's reign".

NOTE that although Sanders speculates that Everard received the lordship in a fresh grant from the king under Wark, under Helmsley Sanders correctly notes that Everard was descended from Espec's sister, and one of his three co-heiresses, Adeline.
