About: The battle of Fontenay,was caused by contentions over the division of the Holy Roman Empire of Louis the Pious.The contenders were his three surviving sons: Lothiar (from whose name come Lorraine - as in Alsace-Lorraine), Charles the Bald, and Louis the German. Lothar was defeated by his brothers and escaped.
