The Australian Army is Australia's military land force. Along with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), it forms the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Formed from amalgamating the six separate Colonial Military Forces in March 1901, the Australian Army has gone through various name changes to get to where it is today, including Commonwealth Military Force and Australian Military Force (AMF). The AMF established the Australian Flying Corps in 1912 which was separated to form the RAAF in 1921. From 1788 to 1901 the defence of the British Colonies that led to the Australian Commonwealth was conducted in two phases: British marine and army units stationed in Australia (1788-1870s) and Colonial Military Forces (1870s to 1901).
