The 57th Australian Infantry Battalion was raised in Egypt on 18th February 1916 as part of the "doubling" of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Half of its recruits were Gallipoli veterans from the 5th Battalion, and the other half, fresh reinforcements from Australia. Reflecting the composition of the 5th, the 57th was predominantly composed of men from the suburbs of Melbourne. The battalion became part of the 15th Brigade of the 5th Australian Division. The 57th fought on the Western Front until the end of the war, and disbanded in March 1919. The battalion had four commanding officers: James Campbell Stewart, John Joseph Scanlon, Charles Aloysius Denehy, and Herbert Thomas Christopher Layh.

Members of the battalion were awarded: two Companions of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), 1 Bar; 17 Military Crosses (MC), 1 Bar; twelve Distinguished Conduct Medals (DCM); 63 Military Medals (MM), two Bars; seven Meritorious Service Medals (MSM); 21 Mentions in Despatches; six foreign awards.
