The 2/4th Australian Casualty Clearing Station was raised in Victoria and established in 1941 initially at Port Dickson, Malaya. Just weeks later, the 2/4th CCS was re-located to Kajang, outside Kuala Lumpur. As the Japanese advanced, the 2/4th CCS was re-located initially to Tampoi, beside the 2/13th AGH and then to Bukit Panjang English School, Singapore before finally setting-up at The Swiss Club, just north of Singapore City on 6th February 1942. The commanding officer was Lieutenant Colonel Tom Hamilton and the initial matron was Irene Drummond. Irene was replaced by Kit Kinsella in August 1941. When Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15th February 1942, those doctors, nurses and patients not killed in frenzied Japanese murders became prisoners-of-war for the next three and a half years. Four of the 2/4th CCS sisters were murdered by the Japanese in the 'Bangka Island Massacre'.
