Biography

Rose (Casswell) Sumbler is a part of US Black heritage.

Rose Casswell was born in 1865 in Spring Hill (now Forest Hill, Rapides Parish, Louisiana. She appears on the 1870 census in that location living in the household with her parents, Virgil Casswell and Jane. Rose is five years old and has four siblings. ^[1]

In 1880, her family is living in the same location but with the last name of Clarke. It is definitely the same family with the parents Virgil and Jane. There is one additional daughter, Emma 6 years old. ^[2]

There is no further record on Rose until her 1890 marriage to William Sumbler on 2 May 1890 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. ^[3]

In 1900, still in Spring Hill, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, Rose is a widow and has five children listed on the census. Two of the sons are Sherman and George who also appear in the Liberty Hill Cemetery records. ^[4]

Rose Casswell Sumbler died 9 April 1953 at age 89 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. ^[5]
