Biography

Stephen is the son of naval officer John Cassin and became a naval midshipman in 1800. He gained experience in the Quasi-War with France. During the War of 1812 he commanded the USS Ticonderoga at the Battle of Lake Champlain for which he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
