Recompence Cary was the son of Jonathan Cary and Sarah (Allen) Cary.[1] According to the book "John Cary, the Plymouth Pilgrim," Recompense was born in Bridgewater in 1688.[2] That place of birth is no doubt correct, based on his parents' residency in Bridgewater. The 1688 date of birth, however, appears to be an estimate, probably based on his 1711 date of marriage. No record has been found that establishes his precise date of birth.
Sarah, b. 11 July 1718,[4][1] m. 6 January 1741/2 Benjamin Hayward in Bridgewater,[3][1] d. 10 April 1776 in Bridgewater[11]
Simeon, b. 6 December 1719, m. 27 June 1754 Mary Howard in Bridgewater, d. 30 January 1802 in Bridgewater (supporting sources are in Simeon's profile)
Zebulon, b. 9 June 1721,[12][1] m. 1st 8 October 1747 Mehitabel Gannett in Bridgewater,[13][8] m. 2d 28 November 1749 Lydia Phillips in Bridgewater,[13] d. 7 May 1759 in Bridgewater[5]
Jonathan, b. 26 March 1722/3,[14][1] m. 30 December 1747 Mary Curtis of Stoughton, in Bridgewater,[7][8]
Recompence died in 1759.[1][16] There is a record in the Bridgewater Vital Records for the death of "Recompence, ch. Recompence and Mary, May 18, 1759,"[5] which appears to be a record of the death of a child named Recompense, but may be for Recompence himself, since no source suggests that he had a child named Recompence and sources state that he died in 1759. A cenotaph to Recompense, his grandfather John, father Jonathan, and son Jonathan can be found in Ashland Cemetery in what-is-now Brockton, Massachusetts.[16]
Probate
The will of Recompence Cary of Bridgewater was dated 25 June 1750 and proved on 4 June 1759 in Plymouth. He mentions his widow Sarah, and his three daughters, Sarah Howard, Mary Crossman, and Abigail Cary, and his sons, Simeon, Jonathan, and Zebulon.[17]
On 4 June 1759, Jonathan Cary was appointed executor of his estate since the executor of his will, Zebulon had died.[18]
His inventory was taken on 18 June 1759 in Bridgewater.[19]
In 1760, an account of his estate was recorded which included administration fees, funeral charges, and debts paid.
