John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville was born on 22 April 1690.3 He was the son of George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret of Hawnes and Grace Granville, Countess Granville.4 He married, firstly, Frances Worsley, daughter of Sir Robert Worsley, 4th Bt. and Hon. Frances Thynne.5 He married, secondly, Lady Sophia Fermor, daughter of Thomas Fermor, 1st Earl Pomfret. He died on 2 January 1763 at age 72.
He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Carteret, of Metesches, in Jersey [E., 1645] on 22 September 1695.3 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Carteret of Hawnes, co. Bedford [E., 1681] on 22 September 1695.3 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl Granville [G.B., 1715] on 18 October 1744.6,3 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount Carteret [G.B., 1715] on 18 October 1744.3

John took his seat in the house of Lords 25 May 1711,he became known as a staunch supporter.

On the 18 Oct 1714 :in the July of 1715 bailiff of Jersey;on the 6 July 1716 Lord Leiutentant.
And Custos rotulorum of the county of Devon.This he held till August 1721,when he resigned in favour of Hugh 14th Baron Clinton.In 1720 he had sold the de Carteret Property and Seigneurie to Colonel John Johnson therby depriving the line of inheritance,which should have been passed back to the next male line.} Hon Edward de Carteret of Haynes Bedford shire{.
His mother had succeded as a coheiress to the Bath Estates on the death of her nephew William.
3rd Earl of Bath,without issue,in May of 1711,she was on the 1st of January 1715 created.

The summer of 1723 was spent in Germany with the King George 1 as John was the only minster who could speak German,he together with Lord Townsend as Secretary of State"you will see by my lords dispatches how much ye king is pleased with your conduct".
There are letters dated ,13 Aug.23 Sept 1723.the August letter which was writen by John denying.
The calummy that he had insinuated that money had been improperly distributed during recent treaty negotiations,an interesting letter insomuch as it shows of the struggle between Carteret and.
Walpole for political supremacy ,John through his abilty to speak direct to the king had gained him the influence over Walpole,"Count Welling gives out ,yet he can bring proofs,I have said yet ye Treaty made with the king as Elector cost his Majesty a great sum of money.If he would insinuate by yet expression yet money was given candestinely,nothing can be more scandalous,nor false far from saying any such thing,I never gave the least hint yet was to any one living.".
In 1743 John was back in Germany for what purpose at this point we do not know,but his wife died. And was buried in Hanover.
The Dictionary of National Biographies [1] references his death in Bath in 1763 (available on Ancestry.[2]
