Biography

Marie (Carter) Bryant is a part of US Black heritage.

Rithie Marie Carter was born on 31 Oct 1899 in Decatur, Illinois. She was the daughter of Richard E Carter and Julia Piper.[1][2][3]

Marie married LeRoy "Roy" Pryor on 15 Aug 1914 in Decatur, Illinois.[4][5] They had four children:[6][7]

Roy was abusive, so Marie registered assault charges against him and they divorced in the 1920's. [8]

By 1930, she was living in Decatur, Illinois with her children and Thomas Bryant,[9] who she would later marry in 1942.[6] By 1940, they had moved to Peoria, Illinois.[10][11] In Peoria, Marie was the proprietor of two brothels in the red light district on North Washington Street and a tavern and night club called The Famous Door.[8] She was also a member of Norafield Taylor Temple 270 IBPOE and the chairman of the advisory board of the United Neighborhood Corporation in Peoria.[6]

Marie was comedian Richard Pryor's paternal grandmother. He lived with her as a child and called her Mama. She had a profound influence on his life.[8]

Marie passed away on 9 Dec 1978 in the Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Decatur, Illinois.[6][1][12]
