James Carter was born February 8, 1720, in Lancaster, Middlesex county, Massachusetts Bay Colony [1] and was living in Lancaster, Worcester county, Massachusetts at the time of the American Revolutionary War. Named after the city of Worcester, England, the town of Worcester was incorporated on June 14, 1722. On April 2, 1731, Worcester was chosen as the county seat of the newly founded Worcester County government. [2]
In 1737, James, aged 17 years, nominated his mother Ruth Carter to be his guardian.[3] In 1740, after the death of his mother, James, aged 19 years, nominated Oliver Wilder of Lancaster to be his guardian.[4]
James Carter was the "Town Moderator" for the years 1782 and 1783. [5] James is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and DAR Ancestor #A214864. DAR records indicate that James died July 18, 1800, in Lancaster, Worcester county, Massachusetts, and that he was the husband of two wives. His first wife was Prudence Sawyer and his second wife was Mary Walker. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his son, Asa Carver, who married Ruth Culver. [6] Note: All descendants of this family are eligible to join the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.
