Edward Henry Carstens was born on 28 April 1841 in Oldenburg, Germany. [1] [2] His parents were Ulrich Carstens and Ida Magaretha Remmings. [2] [3]

He immigrated to the United States on 10 June 1852 on the ship Gaston. [3] He immigrated with his parents and his siblings Heinrich Jansen, Anneheren (?), Ulrich Anton, and Adeline Gesine. [3]

He appeared in the 1860 US Census in Green Garden, Will County, Illinois. [1] He was living with his father and his siblings Henry, Anton, and Catharine. [1] He was a laborer. [1]

He married Minnie Lopine on 15 October 1870 in Renville County, Minnesota. [4] They had the following children:

  4. Paul [6]
  5. Henry [7]
  6. Harry [8]
  7. Mabel [8]

He appeared in the 1875 Minnesota Census in Beaver Falls, Renville County, Minnesota. [5] He was living with his wife Minnie and their children Mary and Ida. [5]

He appeared in the 1880 US Census in Eidsvold, Lyon County, Minnesota. [6] He was living with his wife Minnie and their children Mary, Ida, William, and Paul. [6] He was a farmer. [6] His parents-in-law, John and Mary Lopine, were living next door. [6]

He appeared in the 1885 Minnesota Census in Hope, Lincoln County, Minnesota. [7] He was living with his wife Minnie and their children Mary Anna, Ida Louisa, William Frederick, Paul John, and Henry Sexton. [7]

He appeared in the 1895 Minnesota Census in Eidsvold, Lyon County, Minnesota. [8] He was living with his wife and their children Ida, Willie, Paul, Henry, Harry, and Mabel. [8] He was working at a general store. [8]

He appeared in the 1900 US Census in Eidsvold Township, Lyon County, Minnesota. [9] He was living with his wife and their children William, Paul, Henry, Harry, and Mabel. [9] He was a pool master. [9]

He appeared in the 1905 Minnesota Census in Taunton, Lyon County, Minnesota. [10] He was living with his wife and their children Harry, Mabel, William, and William's wife. [10]

He appeared in the 1910 US Census in Eidsvold Township, Lyon County, Minnesota. [11] He was living with his wife and their children Harry and Mabel. [11] He was a merchant. [11]

He appeared in the 1920 US Census in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. [12] He was living with his wife, their daughter Mabel, and their granddaughter Florence Shumake(?). [12]

He died on 12 August 1926 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. [2]

He was buried on 16 August 1926. [2]

Research Notes

  • In the 1860 Census his name is listed as "Odon". But many of the names are misspelled on this census. [1]
  • An Onke Henry Carstens was naturalized in Joliet, Will County, Illinois in 1857. Ulrich Carstens was a witness. [13]
