Her mother died when she was less than a year old. Her father remarried that same year. She was living with her father, stepmother and stepbrother in 1860.[1]

Born in Portland, Oregon, to pioneer parents; taught at Pacific University prior to becoming the first chair of the English Department at the University of Oregon in 1888. She became the Dean of Women there in 1895, and remained with the University until 1909. Carson departed to become the fifth president of Mills College in Oakland, CA 1909 to 1914. Carson Hall, a women’s residence at the University of Oregon, was named in her honor. She was a writer, best known for her Handbook of English Composition, a textbook on English grammar and style adopted by Wellesley College and the New York City public schools.[4]

Luella Clay Carson, 83, former dean of women at the University of Oregon, died Tuesday in Pomona, Cal. She came to the university as head of the English department in 1888, and. went to Mills College as president In 1909. Miss Carson was born in Portland in 1856, the daughter of John Carson and Elizabeth Talbot Carson, Oregon pioneers. She attended St. Helen's Hall and Mills college, and later took graduate work at Columbia university. She also served as professor and dean In several midwest colleges and universities. Miss Carson is survived by a half-sister, Mrs. Frances Carson Piatt of New York City.[5]
