Succeeded by 20th Governor Daniel Martin |
Thomas King Carroll (April 29, 1793 – October 3, 1873) served as the 21st Governor of the state of Maryland in the United States from 1830 to 1831. He also served as a judge, and in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1816 to 1817.
Thomas King Carroll owned the home known as Kingston Hall in Maryland. It was built by the French Huguenot Le Conte. Thomas King Carroll's law firm was partnered with his cousin Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Francis Scott Key and Robert Goodloe Harper. Robert Goodloe Harper was his son in law. The story goes that only child Elizabeth Barnes King daughter of Thomas King I, a Protestant who witnessed two of his friends hanged for treason, was outraged when Col. James Henry Carroll crossed the Chesapeake. He is purported to have been a cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, and Archbishop Bishop John Carroll, and Elizabeth Barnes King fell in love with him. Thomas King wanted to boot the handsome Catholic off his land, but Elizabeth married him. Thomas King put up a not welcome sign between their neighboring lands. After the birth of Thomas King Carroll, his grandfather was desperate to see him but wasn't granted the chance until Elizabeth's second child named after Lord Baltimore "Cecil" was born. The boy Thomas King Carroll was escorted to his grandfather by the Calvert Carroll horse Coach. To quote, " Grandfather, Sir, my father and my lady mother desire me to present their compliments'". Thomas King I said, "Tommy my son, you have come home!" The child ran to his grandfather's arms, in his silk stockings, satin breeches, frilled shirt, buckled shoes and little coat - a replica of his elders'. After his grandfather passed on, the great chasm over religion lifted between Kings and the Carroll's. [1] as told by Mary Robbin Bower.
