Tech Sergeant John Carroll was Killed in Action over Romania in Operation Tidal Wave during World War II.
John was born in 1910 or 1911.
He was killed in action on 1 August 1943 when the B-24, Hell's Wench, crashed in Ploesti, Romania during Operation Tidal Wave. He was the Radio Operator on the bomber. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Purple Heart for the mission. His name is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, Florence, Città Metropolitana di Firenze, Toscana, Italy.[1]
On 23 August 2022, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified his remains, missing from World War II as part of the Ploiești Unknowns Project. He was reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery.[2][3]
