He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 10, 1940. He served 857 days including 574 days overseas in the United Kingdom and Egypt. He was killed in action on February 13, 1943 in Charlecote, UK.[2]
Urban was awarded the Defense Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He held the rank of Warrant Officer First Class.[2]
In 1943, he was attached to the 22nd Overseas Training Unit, a unit formed in April 1941 at RAF Wellesbourne Mountford to train night bomber crews on Vickers Wellington bomber aircraft.[3] On Feb 13 of that year, he was piloting a Wellington III with 8 other military personnel onboard when it was lost in a crash.
