Biography
From ancestry.com file:
Horace and Mary got gold fever and took off for the gold fields of California sometime in the fall of 1851 or early spring of 1852. They left baby Ellen born in May, 1851 with relatives, probably Grandma Catherine who also lived in Illinois. We have no idea what route they took to the Gold fields, the only thing we know is their route home with newborn Catherine(Katie),born @Placerville, Cal. then known as old Dry Diggings & Georgetown. They probably went thru Sacramento to San Francisco and took ship along the Southern coast of Baja, we know they disenbarked at Panama and took mules across the isthmus and probably took ships back up,probably to New Orleans and trains on back to Illinois---RICH. It didn't seem to change either Horace or Mary, but according to family legend, Katie became quite a snob.
