Biography

Charles "the Straightforward," of Carolingian dynasty was,"the third and posthumous son of Louis the Stammerer by his second wife, Adelaide of Paris," (Wikipedia, 2011).

He styled himself, "rex francorum" and later "rex franciæ." ... But his reign was not successful. According to Floddard, he was captured and imprisoned in 923. Thietmar of Merseburg, claims that Heinrich I King of Germany secured his release from prison at the end of his life.[6]

His second wife Eadgifu of Wessex, fled to England in 923 but returned to France in 936, where she was the Abbess of Notre Dame de Laon until 951, when she married Heribert III "le Viex" de Vermandois, Comte le Viex, (Cawley, 2006).[7][1]

Hi! Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Charles "The Simple" was King Charles IV, according to this: https://mbp.science.ru.nl/leo_meerts/genealogy/meerte/List_of_Frankish_Kings.html Charles "The Fat" https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Carolingian-190 was king before "The Simple." Also, "The Fat" was born before "The Simple". If I am correct, please correct the error, if not please let me know!

Thank you, N

The cited article references wikipedia, which lists Charles the Simple as Charles III, not IV. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_the_Simple.

Clean-up with contemporary sources and fixed name fields according to standards. See his alleged descendants for 'de Coursey' (apparently it's coming from an unknown/unproven child (named Charles -- which explains the mystery of Wigelus down the line) of second wife Eadgifu.[1][2] But according to Cawley (2006), she only had one known child: Louis.[3] PS: see changes for family trees.

John: His third son was born in Courcy and was called Charles of Courcy according to http://www.decourcy.net/history/. I suspect that middle name was mistakenly attached here. I'm going to move it to other nicknames for now. If others want to weigh in, we could remove it entirely.

Does anyone know why he has 'de Courcy' as a middle name or what source this is based on? It doesn't appear in any reliable source I have seen
