John Carmichael was born January 19, 1736, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. During the Revolutionary War, John hired a substitute to serve in the Continental Army, in his place. [1] John made his residence, first in Derry Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, where he was twice married. The name of his first wife is not recorded by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, but descendants of his second wife, Isabella Pomeroy are recorded. (See his spouse's profile for additional information. DAR records indicate that John died February 20, 1799, in Washington county, Tennessee. [2]

Find A Grave memorial # 86179476 comment:

Came to America from Scotland with parents, Cornelius Carmichael and Isabella. Eventually settled in Wayne Twp., Cumberland Co., PA. First married Jeanette Thompson with whom he had a daughter; with his second wife, Isabella Pomeroy, he had a family of thirteen children. After his brother Daniel died while serving in the Revolution in Dec. 1777, he and his family moved to be with his mother, her new husband, James Thompson, and his brother James in TN. This occurred around 1792. He took his family to live in Jonesborough, Washington Co., where he died in 1799.

Research Notes

There are six men named, "John Carmicheal" who served in the military during the Revolutionary War:

Ancestor #: A019284: Private John Carmichael, born May 5,1740, in Glascow, Scotland, died November 19, 1806, in Sand Lake New York, served in New York Ancestor #: A019285: John Carmichael, born October 17, 1728, in Tarbert, Scotland, died November 15, 1785, in Windsor Place, PA, married Catherine Mustard

Ancestor #: A019286 This John Carmichael, who married Isabel Pomeroy

Ancestor #: A019287: John Carmichael, born before 1740, in Scotland, died 1808, in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, married Nancy Graham Ancestor #: A019288: John Carmichael, born August 7, 1757, in Chester, PA, died 1848, in Carroll county, Georgia Ancestor #: A019292: John Carmicahel, born circa 1746, died August 3, 1841, buried in Monroe county, Ohio, married Elizabeth Crow

The Find A Grave memorial for Isabel Pomeroy, [3]who married THIS John Carmichael is connected to an incorrect John Carmichael, [4] and gives Scotland as his birthplace and his parents as Isabella and Cornelius Carmichael. The year of birth 1728 correlates with that of Ancestor #: A019285. It is likely, however, that this John Carmichael is the son of Cornelius, from Scotland. His brother, Daniel Carmichael (DAR Ancestor #A019275) also made his residence in Derry Township, Cumberland county.

John was born in 1728. He passed away in 1799.

Carmichael-3448 and Carmichael-164 appear to represent the same person because: Similar birth and death information and same spouse.
I doubt I will be able to start the research required to determine the accuracy of the birthplace before the end of the year. Unfortunately I have to many other pressing issues that will require my time. If you find any reliable references that list the birthplace let me know and I will gladly make the change.

The research I have is documentation my aunt had commissioned in 1985 for entry into the DAR. One of the articles is titled "The Carmichael Brothers of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, John, James, Daniel", by Raymond Martin Bell. I just read back through the documents and found the only place a birthplace is listed for my ancestor, Daniel, has a birthplace listed as Pennsylvania with a question mark beside the entry. I have seen other documentation on websites that lists one of the brothers born before the family migrated to America. Of course there is no documents listed to back up that claim. Since John was the oldest, this could be true. I think more research beyond Find a Grave is required to determine the actual birthplace.

Are we sure he was born in Pennsylvania? His Find a Grave entry gives Scotland as his birth place ... Add primary source? Thanks!

See John's Find a Grave profile; more research needs to be done, but it says he was born in Scotland and came to America with his parents.
