In Marion County on September 3, 1865, Robert Roberts married Mary Elizabeth Carlton Grantham. She had married John Grantham, son of Daniel Grantham, Jr. and Martha Mariah Roberts, on September 1, 1859. He died while serving in the Confederate Army. They had a daughter, Mary Jane Grantham born January 8, 1861.
In the winter of 1867, the Roberts moved to the region known as New Zion settlement near present day Ona in then Manatee County (since 1921 Hardee County), Florida. Robert was so poor that he brought all his family of Mary Elizabethand two young children and their belongings in a common ox cart, drawn by a single yoke of oxen. He built a log house, cleared the land, farmed and started a herd of cattle.
