Biography

John Bede Jnr was the second son of J.B. Carlton, JP, and Kate Carlton of Cowper and Ulmarra. He was born at Cowper on 18 Dec 1870.

In 1889, John Bede Carlton attended St Ignatius College and joined the rowing crew. That same year, he was one of 10 Cowper residents who passed the Junior Public Examinations held in connection with the University of Sydney. He studied Arithmetic, Geography, Geology and Geometry.

John married Florence May Cook in Sydney on 6 Jun 1906. They had 3 children: Catherine Marie Carlton (later Marie Jago) Helen Clothilde Carlton (later Helen Simpson) Joan Esme Carlton (later Joan Kissane)

John was an auctioneer for many years, trading as Carlton and Clarke Auctioneers. He took an interest in civil and church affairs. He was Mayor of Lismore in 1907. He was made a Knight of the Order of St Gregory by the Pope for his work in the Lismore Diocese. He died on 7 Feb 1959.
