Biography

John C. Carlton, the father of Stephen Carlton, was born in Duplin County, N.C., on April 20, 1775, about the time Paul Revere's saddle cooled off from his now famous ride; so this branch of the Carlton Clan definitely came into being simultaneously with the United States of America. John Carlton grew to manhood in Duplin County, and there he married about 1797, the date has not been fully confirmed, Nancy Ann Alderman, born on Nov. 17, 1775, daughter of David Alderman, a Revolutionary War Soldier, and Jemima Hall, his wife. David Alderman was the son of Daniel Alderman and Abigail Harris; Daniel Alderman was the son of Thomas Alderman and Mary Segrove; and Thomas Alderman was son of William Alderman and Mary Case, said William Alderman having come to Massachusetts from England about 1670.

The Case family is related to the Spencer family of England and America; and through this line our family connections can possibly be traced back to the Surety Barons who enforced the provisions of the Magna Carta after King John had been forced to sign that immortal document at Runnymede in 1215.

He moved his family to Bulloch Co. GA about 1821 or 1822 and a few years later moved to Thomas Co. GA where several of his children had already gone. He bought land, a part of land lot 85 and 86 now adjoining the city of Thomasville, and built his home and lived there several years. He later sold out there and moved eight miles north of Thomasville, on the Ochlocknee River and lived there a few years. His plantation was a large one and he had a sawmill and gristmill both run by water power. He sold this property to his son-in-law Robert M. Hendry. In his later years he sold his possessions in Thomas Co. and moved to Madison Co. Florida where he spent his last years. He and his wife are buried in Friendship Cemetery near Moseley Hall Florida and their graves are plainly marked, though the gravestones are small.

A pioneer settler of Madison County, Florida, was a farmer, sawmill and gristmill operator. the family migrated to Bulloch County, Georgia and then, about 1825, to Thomas County, Georgia.

In 1826 John was a member of the first grand jury ever to be appointed in Thomas County with the Superior Court having convened for the first time in June 1826. In 1827 he was a member of the grand jury that indicted five Indians for robbery, arson, and murder. John was said to have been one of the first judges of the Inferior Court of Thomas County.

Living on the Ochlockonee River, John owned and operated a sawmill and gristmill.

John C. Carlton (Carleton) was the father of Stephan Carlton, Alderman Carlton's brother and my 5 great grandfather. I need to add him to my tree, but need trusted status please.

My family records show him as "Judge" John Carlton. In addition, I believe he is where the surname changes from Carleton to Carlton.
