Biography

Arthur William CARLIER was born around 1871,^[1] possibly in Australia,^[2] the son of Richard CARLIER.^[3]

Arthur married Elizabeth BRUTON on 3 August 1892 in Adelaide SA (at the residence of the Rev E G Day).^[3] The couple had three children.^[4][5]

He was employed as a "tobacco twister" at Dixon's Tobacco Company, Adelaide.^[4]

He was reported to have jumped overboard on 13 March 1900 from the steamer Paroo while travelling from Adelaide to Fremantle (sometimes reported as Albany, so perhaps the steamer was making a stop there), in Western Australia. He was travelling to Fremantle for Dixon's Tobacco Company with a colleague. The reported position (35 degrees 21 minutes South 124 degrees 37 minutes East) is about 300 kms south-east of Esperance, in international waters off Western Australia. He left a wife, Elizabeth, and three children.^[6][4][5]

His body was recovered from the water. On the next day, 14 March 1900, he was buried at sea after a service by the ship's captain, Captain Medley.^[4]
