Nicholas Carew of Beddington and Warlingham, Surrey, was a Knight of the Shire for Surrey, and sometime Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex. His daughter Elizabeth was by his first wife, Isabel, daughter of Stephen and Alice de la Mare of Delamere (in Wheathampstead) Hertfordshire.[1]
Nicholas Carew was born about 1356.[2] He was the son and heir of Nicholas Carew[3] of Beddington, keeper of the privy seal, by his wife Lucy, daughter and heir of Sir Richard Willoughby of Beddington, widow of Sir Thomas Huscarle of Purley Magna, Berks.[2]
He married lst probably by May 1374, Isabel, daughter of Alice de la Mare of Delamers, Herts.[2] They had at least one son Nicholas.[2]
He married 2nd by July 1398, Mercy daughter of Stephen Hayme of Winchester by his wife Christine.[2] They had at least eight sons and eight daughters.[2]
NIcholas Carew was active as a crown servant in the south east for almost 30 years of his life. His administrative career began with his appointment as sheriff of Surrey and Sussex, and from then on wards he served regularly on royal commissions as well as sitting on the bench.

He died on 4 September 1432.[5] His heir was his son Nicholas.[5]
Nicholas Carew is buried beneath a magnificent brass in the floor of the chancel of St Mary's Church, Beddington. It shows him and his first wife Isabel under a low canopy with an embattled cornice, with shields of arms above and below, and has the following marginal inscription:
'Hic jacent | corpora Nicholai Carrew Armigeri et d[omini] quondam huius ville Isabelle uxoris sue et Thome filii eorũdem, qui quidem | Nicholaus senex et plenus diei in pace | quievit Quarto die mens['] Septembris Anno domini Mill[essim]o ccccoxxxijo [here is a gap of about one-third of the line] |✠ in gracia & misericordia dei.'[6]
