Biography

Samuel C. was enumerated; including M A Candler, Eliza C and Charles M in the United States Census, 1860 at Decatur District, DeKalb County, Georgia.^[1]

For the United States Census, 1870 and seen in the image of the original, he is listed as farm laborer and also in the house are Milton A Candler, Eliza Candler, C Murphy Candler, Milton A Candler, Laura Candler, Florence Candler, and likely domestics Sarah Sprinkler and Emma Word with her probable children Frederick Word and Martha Word. This was recorded June 18, 1870, at the Decatur Post Office in the Decatur District in DeKalb County, Georgia.^[2]

Samuel E Candler was enumerated as son at Decatur M.D. No. 531, DeKalb County, Georgia for the June 9, United States Census, 1880. He was noted as a clerk in a dry-goods store, born 1860 in Georgia and single as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are self M A Candler, wife Eliza C Candler, son Murphy Candler, son Milton A Candler, daughter Laura Candler, daughter Florence Candler, son Maury Lee Candler, daughter Claude Candler, daughter Ruth Candler, other Grace Calaway and other Andrew Alice.^[3]

Samuel was enumerated in the 1900 United States Census, as residing in Los Angeles, California, USA. He is head of house, 41 years old, working as a Salesman. Also in the household are his wife Jane Johnson Porter 39, and their daughter Helen Candler 6. Jane indicates that she has only had 1 child, and 1 child is living. The census record also reflects that they have been married for 15 years.

In the 1910 United States Census, we find Samuel, 50 years old residing as a lodger in San Francisco, California. He indicates that he is married (Jane is not residing there as well) and he is working as a clerk at a Newspaper.
