Biography

Notables Project
Kim Campbell is Notable.

In 1993, Kim Campbell became the first Canadian woman to serve as Prime Minister of Canada. She led Canada's 24th Prime Ministry, and was the 19th person to hold the position of Prime Minister.

Born March 10, 1947 in Port Alberni, British Columbia, she was the youngest daughter of George Campbell, a barrister, and Phyllis "Lissa" Cook. Her older sister, Alix, was born in 1945.[1]

As a teenager, she chose to be known as "Kim." She graduated in 1964 from Vancouver's Prince of Wales Secondary School, where she was its first female student body president. After earning her honours bachelor's degree in political science from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1969, she completed a year of graduate work there before studying at the London School of Economics. [2]She returned in 1972 to Vancouver, where she taught political science at UBC from 1975 to 1978 while working on her doctoral thesis. Deciding against an academic career, she abandoned her thesis to study law. [3]In 1983 she earned an LL.B. from the UBC Law School and was called to the British Columbia bar in 1984.

Kim practised law for two years in Vancouver before embarking on a political career. She was elected in 1986 to the B.C. provincial legislature. In November 1988 she was elected as a Progressive Conservative to the House of Commons. She served as minister of state for Indian Affairs and Northern Development in 1989 and in 1990 became justice minister and attorney general. In January 1993 she was appointed defense minister. She replaced Prime Minister Brian Mulroney after he retired in June 1993, becoming Canada’s 24th prime minister. That November the Progressive Conservatives were soundly defeated at the polls, retaining only two seats, and she resigned as party leader[4]

Her post-political career began with the writing of her autobiography, Time and Chance, which was published in 1996. She served as consul general to Los Angeles from 1996 to 2000 and chair of the Council of World Leaders from 1999 to 2003. From 2003 to 2005 she was president of the International Women’s Forum in Washington, D.C. During this time, she was also involved with the Center for Public Leadership and lectured at Harvard University. She has also sat on the boards of various companies and NGOs and was a founding member of the Club de Madrid. In 2014 she became the founding principal of the Peter Lougheed Leadership College at the University of Alberta. She is currently the chairperson for Canada's Supreme Court Advisory Board.

Marriage
Kim married Nathan Divinsky on September 15, 1972, in London, England. They separated in 1982, divorcing the following year. Her second marriage was to Howard R. Eddy on August 23, 1986, in Vancouver. They divorced in 1993.[5] She is currently married to Hershey Felder.
