Ruth Margaret Letitia Campbell was born on 2bd June 1908 in Austinmer, New South Wales, Australia. She was the daughter of Thomas R S Campbell and Judith M unknown. [1]
She became a nurse.
On 4th October 1941 Ruth was commissioned as a Sister, with the rank of Lieutenant, in the Australian Army Nursing Service. [2] Posted to the 2/9th Australian General Hospital, she was deployed outside Port Moresby during the Kokoda and Northern Beachheads Campaigns. She was discharged on 7th November 1947.
Following the war Ruth married William Hurren in 1947 in Sydney, New South Wales. [3]
Reg Chard, an Australia soldier who she cared for on two occasions in late 1942 and early 1943, recalled her as 'the soldiers' angel', for having gone out of her way to ensure he was 'smuggled' aboard a Sea Ambulance Service transport and repatriated to Sydney for treatment. [4]
She passed away in April 1984.
