Charles was born in Toowoomba, QLD in 1901, the son of William Campbell, a grazier and his wife Wilhelmina Christina Johanna, nee Hess.
Charles had worked in the Territory of New Guinea from about Mar 1941 as a sawyer and timber trader at Wangarmut planatation. When the Japanese invaded in Jan 1942, he was captured at Kokopo, not far from Rabaul. He was interned as a civilian prisoner.
He died on board the "Montevideo Maru" when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of the Philippines on 01 Jul 1942, en route from Rabaul to Hainan where he was destined for forced labour.
He was not married.
