Thanks for all you're doing on the 19th century Sizemore profiles!

Hi, J

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi 7th cousin (once removed) via the Sizemores.

Hi Todd! From which of the Sizemores do you descend? It's a very interesting family and one which I spend a lot of time researching. I saw that someone recently posted on G2G an appeal for help sorting out the Sizemore genealogy and all I can really give is a "good luck with that!" because after going some generations back it's a challenge to try to sort out all the Georges, Williams, etc. My direct line moved to western TN/KY in the early 1800s while many remained back east. Then moved to southern Illinois after the Civil War. Jennifer

High Jennifer! My great-great grandmother, Emily Jane (Sizemore) Lawson, daughter of Solomon Sizemore is who I descend from (on my mother's side). Yes, the Sizemore's are an interesting family. Very prominent in SE Kentucky, E. Tennessee (Hancock and Hawkins Co), and SW Virginia. Are you familiar with the "Lost Tribe of Appalachia" aka the "Melungeons""? There are about 30 or so surnames associated with Melungeons, and Sizemore is one of the prominent Melungeon family names. I find it very fascinating.

Yes! I have been studying that history for some time now. I came about it in a rather unusual way, I think. I have a Black friend of the name Goins (he's our mayor now!) and years ago I was visiting graves of Sizemore ancestors in southern Illinois and noticed Goins headstones nearby. It's not a very common name where I live but because I have a friend of that name it drew my attention and that led me to the "Melungeons." It does seem there were associated families back in Virginia early on and they scattered to different locations but it appears that portions of associated families may have migrated together to various places. I haven't fully researched that yet to see if they were from the same families. My 4x g-grandpa, George Sizemore (I believe Solomon's brother?), was married to Elizabeth Callicott whose two sisters married Vaughans and settled in Hawkins, TN. So, that's another connection to the Sizemores and eastern KY. I'm also trying to figure out if there was a strong connection to music going way back in the Sizemore family. My grandma, who was teaching piano lessons from the time she was 13 and accompanied silent movies, mentioned when I was a child that she had an uncle who was a composer. This was Arthur Sizemore. He and his brother were both musicians and composers. Their mother died when they were still infants so I've concluded that my gg-grandfather, John Calvin Sizemore, may have been musically inclined. Music is something that got passed down through at least the last few generations and the connection seems to be the Sizemore family. I'm wondering if that's true for any other Sizemore descendants. My brother ended up with a little NA DNA but not me. I find the line to be very fascinating and also very frustrating in trying to tie it all together. They were very prolific!

Hello!

I’m conducting the 6-month check in for the US Black Heritage Project. Because we are growing so fast, it’s not always possible for me to see what everyone’s working on.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on and if you are still happy being a part of the Slavery Team. Members can change teams at any time. If you need something to work on, we now have a master task list here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage_Project_Tasklist

We now have a project badge! Hooray! As soon as I hear back from you that you’d like to continue with the project, I will add the badge to your profile.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Emma

Hi J.a.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions or problems, let me know.

Take care

Hi J.a., I see that you just volunteered and signed our honor code. That's great! Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Maybe you have some historically significant ancestors? I see you have surnames for tags. Why don't you stop by the One Name Studies project, to see if there's already a name study for Blair, Doss or Sizemore going on? The current leaders for that are Doug Lockwood and Alison Andrus. They would be happy to get you started.

Let me know if you need any help! We're glad to have you on board!!
